To help pay my way through college as a landscape architecture student, I worked as a framing carpenter, first through a summer, then across a fall season. I didn't know it at the time, but working in carpentry was, in a subtle way, teaching me how to think about design.
The summer job was with a four-person crew working on several 2,500- to 3,000-square-foot custom homes typical of Pacific Northwest construction in the 1970s.
The scope of work progressed through three phases: site and foundation work (hillside excavation, forming, reinforcing, and concrete pouring); structural framing (floor decking, wall framing, stairs, trusses, and wood decks); and exterior finishing (plywood sheathing, cedar siding, fascia, roofing, decks, and railing).
Some sites didn't match the blueprints exactly, so part of the job was adapting the plans to the ground we were actually standing on.
The job later that fall was a single 3,000-square-foot custom home, built under a skilled craftsman with an eye for detail. I read blueprints and framed interior and exterior walls, stairs, and trusses. I also installed exterior plywood sheathing, cedar siding, and fascia. It was focused work on one house, done right.
The Framework Matters
The single biggest takeaway from those two seasons was this: everything that comes after depends on what you build first. Drywall will go up easy on a wall that was framed straight, and fight you on one that wasn't. Every trade that follows foundational work, like drywall, trim, cabinetry, and finish work, inherits whatever precision, or lack of it, was built to support it. A carpenter who frames carelessly isn't just making their own job harder; they're inadvertently making every job downstream harder too.
That idea didn't stay confined to job sites. It's the same principle that shows up over and over on my career path. In any discipline, the early decisions are the ones that compound. Grading set wrong means a drainage fight for decades. A poorly sited foundation makes every later choice a workaround instead of a solution. Being a framing carpenter reinforced the need to think about those who follow — to ask not just "does this work now?" but "What am I making harder, or easier, for the person who has to build on top of this later?"
In short, get the framing right, and everything else is easier to keep true. Adapt the plan to the actual conditions on the ground rather than forcing the ground to match the plan. And respect the person or trade coming in after you, because their experience is going to be whatever you leave them.
